Versa Style

Hip Hop Dance

Versa-Style Dance Company was founded in 2005 by Jackie Lopez and Leigh Foaad, while Jackie was working on her Bachelor’s of Arts degree at UCLA, where she invited Leigh to work on her senior project. The two bonded as creators and embarked on a journey to create the organization Versa-Style has become today. Versa-Style is a dance ensemble that consists of young, committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles. They create highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to their community. These forms include Hip-hop dance styles such as 90s Hip-hop, House, Popping, Locking, Whacking, and Boogaloo, and Afro-Latin dance styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, and Afro-Cuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots, history, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation.

Versa-Style has performed all over the world including in India (2013), as part of a corporate sponsorship with brands in Chennai, Israel (2013), as part of the US Embassy Envoy program, and Edinburgh, Scotland (2015), as a special invite to Jodi Kaplan’s Booking Dance Festival. During these visits, Versa-Style traveled from city to city teaching workshops, speaking at lecture demonstrations, and performing for sell out crowds. Here in the United States, Versa-Style has co-produced full-length productions in Los Angeles in 2010 and 2011 at the Rosenthal Theater at Inner-City Arts, in 2013 at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre as part of the Summer Partnership Series, and in 2014 at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center through Ebony Repertory Theater. Each show has been a huge success, selling out each venue and receiving rave reviews from fans. Finally, Versa-Style has also taken part in legendary hip-hop dance festivals across the country such as the San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Festival (2009, 2010, 2012), the J.U.i.C.E. Hip Hop Dance Festival (2009-2012), and theRennie HarrisIlladelph Legends Festival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2010).

As a result of the success of this class, in 2009 they created a junior company, Versa-Style Next Generation, serving as a pre-professional junior company whose members can eventually transition into the professional touring company.
