Carrie Moran McCleary

Plains Soul Model

An enrolled member of the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana, Carrie resides on the Crow Reservation in southeastern Montana. Carrie is a fashion designer, bead artist, and doll maker who founded her brand Plains Soul in 2016—bringing to life a vision she’s carried since childhood.

Carrie draws creative inspiration from her family, culture, and community. As a child, she was surrounded by artists—her mother, grandmother, and extended relatives—who nurtured her love for beading, sewing, and storytelling. These traditions laid the foundation for the bold, vibrant, and distinctly Northern Plains-inspired work she creates today.

A 2022 First Peoples Fund Artist in Business Leadership Fellow and two-time recipient of the Montana Indian Equity Fund Grant, Carrie has continued to grow as both an artist and entrepreneur. In recent years, she fulfilled a longtime dream by building her own studio and retail space, establishing a permanent home for her creativity and business operations on the Crow Reservation.

Carrie’s fashion designs and beadwork have been showcased in shows and exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. From high-profile fashion events to grassroots Indigenous art shows, her work uplifts and honors her heritage while remaining unapologetically contemporary. She is especially known for her handmade dolls—each one a work of art carrying ancestral stories forward through fabric, thread, and bead.

In addition to her studio work, Carrie hosts a weekly online Indigenous art group that brings together artists from across Turtle Island. This digital circle provides mentorship, collaboration, and support for Indigenous creatives, embodying her belief in collective empowerment and artistic growth.

Outside of fashion and art, Carrie is a devoted wife, mother, and mentor, continually giving back to the communities that have shaped her. Her creations—both wearable and collectible—can be found through her platform, Plains Soul, and represent a celebration of identity, legacy, and Indigenous joy.
